Maryland House Approves Stem Cell Research Bill

The Maryland House of Delegates has passed a bill that guarantees the use of state funds for embryonic stem cell research. Needless to say, the debate was heated and followed along party lines.

This bill sets aside roughly $25 million per year that is to be used for stem cell research conducted in Maryland, permitting both embryonic stem cell and adult stem cell work.

The legislation passed with an 85-54 roll-call vote. The bill now goes to the Maryland Senate, where those representatives that are against stem cell research are promising a filibuster to try to keep it from coming to a vote.

California Institute for Regenerative Science Heads to Trial

The California Institute for Regenerative Science, which was voted into existence by passing a $3 billion California state bond, heads to trial today.

The lawsuit, is pretty straight forward: Institute for Regenerative Science opponents claim that lack of direct state management of the institute's finances is unconstitutional.

Naturally, the state and the institute's lawyers claim that it is not unconstitutional since the original measure amended the state constitution to allow for this kind of independence.

The Stem Cell Debate In Delaware Almost Over

The Delaware House, in a 38-3 vote, approved amendment number two to Senate Bill 80.

This bill dictates that anyone who is caught cloning in Delaware will face a million dollar fine. Additionally, anyone selling embryos whether it be a woman, physician or fertility clinic faces a $100,000 fine.

"That amendment was driven by public outcry because Delaware doesn't have a ban on cloning and that was something that probably should have been done years ago," said Rep. Deborah Hudson.

Patient Groups, Scientists, Advocates Hold National 'Call the White House Day' to Urge Bush to Support Stem Cell Legislation

The Coalition for the Advancement of Medical Research (CAMR), comprised of over 95 nationally-recognized patient groups, scientific societies and academic institutions, will commemorate the fourth anniversary of President Bush's decision to severely limit embryonic stem cell research in the U.S. (August 9th, 2001) with a national "Call The White House Day". Patient groups, scientists, and advocates throughout the nation will call the White House switchboard to urge the President to join Senator Bill Frist (R-TN) and other bipartisan Members of Congress in supporting H.R. 810.

H.R. 810 would change the current federal stem cell policy to allow federally supported scientists to study additional stem cell lines, expand research among America's top academic researchers and accelerate the cure and treatment of diseases. H.R. 810 imposes ethical and legal regulations on the research even as it expands Federal research of additional stem cell lines from voluntarily donated in vitro fertilization (IVF) embryos that will otherwise be discarded.

Stem Cell Research Stalls In Senate .. Again

Wired is covering the stall in the Senate on expanding federal funding of stem cell research. Backers of the bill are unable to get the anticipated vote in July have instead promised today to force the issue one way or another.

Regardless of the threat of a veto by President Bush, the embryonic stem cell bill passed in the House this past May with a broad bipartisan margin. As a result, backers of the bill had believed that they had the momentum needed in the Senate and a vote was set for this month. This however doesn't appear to be the case.

Replublicans Don't All Agree on Bush's Stem Cell Research Bill Pending Veto

Well, getting back from vacation and back into the swing of things, it appears that Republicans don't all follow the lead of the Commander in Chief in regards to the pending embryonic stem cell research funding bill.

Polls are currently showing that most main stream Republicans favor increased federal funding for such research, despite the opposition of President Bush and other conservative leaders. This past May, 50 Republican House members joined Democrats in approving a measure to expand funding.

Now the Senate's is lined up to consider the same issue. As a result, backers of expanded research say they have a chance to further, hoping to garner a majority large enough to override a presidential veto.
