Completion of Proof-of-Principle Studies Demonstrating Efficacy of Cancer Stem Cell Vaccine in Preclinical Model

ImmunoCellular Therapeutics, Ltd. (OTC: IMUC.OB ) (IMUC) a biotechnology company, has announced that recently completed proof-of-principle studies demonstrate efficacy of its cancer stem cell vaccine technology in treating glioblastoma, a form of brain cancer, in preclinical animal models.

The company is planning to submit an Investigational New Drug (IND) application to the FDA later this year to commence a Phase I clinical trial for its cancer stem cell vaccine product, ICT-111, to treat glioblastoma.

Bone Cells that Influence Blood Stem Cell Replication and Migration

Osteoblasts, cells responsible for bone formation, have been found by researchers at the Joslin Diabetes Center to be directly involved in the proliferation and expansion of blood-forming hematopoietic stem cells.

The finding improves understanding of how such stem cells work and could have implications for the future of bone marrow and peripheral blood progenitor cell transplants, which are used in the treatment of a variety of illnesses – including leukemia, lymphoma and immunodeficiency.

Boston University Successfully Treats Amyloidosis Patients Using A Stem Cell Procedure

Researchers at Boston University Medical Center (BUMC), Stem Cell Transplant Program and the Amyloid Treatment and Research Program, have found that tandem cycles of high-dose chemotherapy and blood stem cell transplantation can help treat patients with immunoglobulin-light chain (AL) Amyloidosis who did not respond to initial treatment with this method.

These findings were published on-line in the June 25th issue of Bone Marrow Transplantation.

Adult Stem Cells Decide the Fate of Their Daughters

According to new studies by researchers at the Howard Hughes Medical Institute (HHMI)the intestinal stem cells make important decisions about their fate by communicating directly with their daughter cells, instructing them to become one of two possible cell types.

The studies bring researchers a bit closer to understanding how adult stem cells decide to make the cell type that best meets the current needs of the organism.

Amniotic Fluid of Pregnant Women as an Alternative Stem Cell Source

The cells found in amniotic fluid of pregnant women has many of the same traits as embryonic stem cells; they are able to grow into brain, muscle and other tissues that could be used to treat diseases, researchers said, and are easily retrieved during routine prenatal testing.

They are easier to maintain in laboratory dishes than embryonic stem cells, which come from destroyed human embryos.

Permission To Create Chimeras For Stem Cell Research

At Newcastle University, UK, and Kings College, London, UK, the scientists have found a route for creating stem cell lines. They want to get animals' eggs and place human nuclei inside them, as this research would help for a better understanding of how to cure diseases such as Parkinson’s Diseasea and strokes.

This route would free scientists from using donated human eggs.

Gene Keeps Stem Cells Available To Differentiate

U.S. scientists at St. Jude Children's Hospital in Memphis, Tennessee, say they've found a gene, called Six2, that plays a critical role in the development of human kidneys, by keeping a population of stem cells constantly available to produce the differentiated cells that give rise to specialized parts of the organ.

Expansion Of Hematopoietic Stem Cell with HOXB4

Hematopoietic Stem Cells are very rare, and it is often hard to obtain enough of them for a successful transplant.

Hans-Peter Kiem and colleagues have developed a way to expand HSCs in the laboratory prior to transplantation to surmount this limitation. They report in the international open-access journal PLoS Medicine that the expression of a gene called HOXB4 can instruct stem cells to divide and make more stem cells.

Egg Like Cells Produced From Pig Fetal Stem Cells

Canadian stem cell researchers at the University of Guelph are reporting that they have discoverd stem cells within the skins of pig fetuses are able to produce egg-like cells.

Embryologists have been investigating for years to determine where germ cells are formed. These stem cells show that within the early stage embryo, different cell lines are formed which include the germ cells.

Stem Cell Researchers Again Improving Spinal Cord Injured Rats

Stem cell researchers are once again looking into the brains of mice and how some stem cell therapies can help restore walking ability in laboratory rats with spinal-cord damage. Canadian stem cell researchers are now digging into spinal stem cell therapy for treating spinal damage.

This new study has stem cell researchers looking at neural precursor cells, where is a type of stem cell that has begun differentiating into a central nervous system cells. Specifically, these cells are derived from mouse brains.

Stem Cell Research Hits No Ethical Nerves When Treating Horses

A stem cell research firm in Singapore has been working on giving Asian racehorse owners a new way of treating tendon and ligament injuries. This news follows other news regarding stem cell research for horses that allows treatment and therapies to be developed without ethical concerns.

EZ Stemcell's therapy starts out with harvesting bone marrow from the horse's own sternum. EZ Stemcell then isolates multi-potential stem cells, which are then reinjected into the horse's injured tendon.

Optimal Growth Media for Human Embryonic Stem Cells Found

Stem cell researchers at Yale determined the minimal nutritional requirements for growing and maintaining human embryonic stem cells (hESCs). The growth media is any form of clinical application and for developmental studies.

hESCs divide continuously through many generations and can differentiate into many different types of cell. In order to sustain the hESCs' growth, the mix of nutrients or media they are grown in must be sterile and clear of any toxins or materials that might cause an immune response.

Should Be No Suprise .. Testicles As a Source of Stem Cells

I guess its not suprising news when one things about it really. German stem cell researchers are now reporting they have isolated a unique type of cell within adult mouse testicles. These new cells have many of the same properties of embryonic stem cells.

I just can't help myself .. but did I hear the sperm banks around the world start devising new marketing strategies focusing on stem cells?

Stem Cells Differentiation Process Involved with Leukemia

Researchers have recently discovered what manages the balance between blood stem cells and mature blood cells within the body. This bodily process is often what is seen in leukemia patients.

News coming from an article published in the journal Cancer Cell, will hopefully lead researchers to a better understanding of the behavior of leukemic cells. Additionally, this may provide applications for patients recovering from radiation therapy, bone marrow transplants, and chemotherapy.

Stem Cell Researcher Hwang Woo-suk Officially Dismissed From University

Likely, this comes as no shock ..stem cell researcher Hwang Woo-suk, Korea's regenerative studies guru that was felled over fraud charges, has been offically let go from Seoul National University. The university let him go for leading a research team that deliberately fabricated stem cell research project reports and in two papers.

The move to dismiss Hwang Woo-suk makes a clear message by the university since the stem cell scientist resigned in December.

Stem Cell Research Quickie - New Adult Stem Cell Found

A fast note, though not much depth...

Moraga Biotechnology Corporation, Los Angeles, California adult stem cell research company, has announced that they have discovered a primitive stem cell that is very similar to embryonic stem cells.

Researchers at Moraga have discovered that these adult stem cells can differentiate into nearly any type of tissue or organs. Notable in this is that these stem cells can actually differentiate into spermatogonia.

These stem cells are widespread throughout the body and appear to be retained in adult tissues as "Blastomere-Like Stem Cells (BLSCs)."

Stem Cells Found In The Lung

Researchers at MIT's Center for Cancer Research have discovered stem cells in the lung.

This is thusfar, the first time anyone has found stem cells in the lung that we know of. The MIT team claims that these cells could be the stem cells that cause lung cancer.

"We think those cells are the ones that first proliferate after a [cancer] gene gets activated," says Carla Bender Kim, a postdoctoral fellow at the center and lead author of the study, which was published in the journal Cell.
