Muscle Stem Cells An Option To Treat Congestive Heart Failure

As a new wave of stem cell research continues, cardiologists are trying to tap into the self-renewing cells' life-saving potential.

Scientists have performed the first U.S. controlled, randomized Phase I clinical trial using a three-dimensional guided catheter system to deliver muscular stem cells to the heart.

The study was presented at the American College of Cardiology's Innovation in Intervention: i2 Summit in New Orleans, La.

Stem Cell Research Findings For Wider Applications

British Journal of Haematology published research data which demonstrates that a patient's own blood has the capacity to help in the regeneration and repair of a multitude of damaged tissues.

The efficacy of adult stem cell treatment for cardiac patients developed by TheraVitae has been well documented. The article, entitled "Isolation of an Adult Blood-Derived Progenitor Cell Population Capable of Differentiation into Angiogenic, Myocardial and Neural Lineages", shows that the technology opens the door now for far wider applications.

Stem Cells from Menstral Blood? .. Yep ..

Stem cell researchers in Japan have found that stem cells can actually be harvested from human menstrual blood.

Sure enough, the stem cells are sound very much like hematopoietic stem cells in that they can differentiate into specialised heart cells. Naturally, the goal is to investigate if these cells may be able to be used to treat heart damage.

Stem Cell Heart Therapy Has Mixed Results - Followup

Following up on our article discussing one study's failure to show positive results from one type of stem cell heart therapy, MSN is doing a big breakdown showing both the pros and cons of stem cell research focusing on heart studies. Some of the research instances they discuss do show benefits stem cell heart procedures and goes further to comment on the study done at Technische Universitat in Munich, Germany.

Essentially at this point, the overall research being done regarding heart patients and stem cell related treatments in certainly inconclusive. However, with all the mixed results .. being inconclusive is also certainly not definitive. There is a lot of research work to be done.

Study Showing Bone Marrow Stem Cell Therapy Fails To Repair Heart Damage

Contradicting several of the articles we have dug up here ... researchers in Germany in a new study seem to indicate no measurable benefit to stem cell derived from bone marrow injections don't appear to provide significant benefit. Now I am not sure how to take this .. as this is one of the few studies out there that show this.

However, this new study from Technische Universitat in Munich which focused on the experimental therapy of using the body's bone marrow stem cells to repair damage done to cardiac tissue and blood vessels did not appear to work.

This latest study focused specifically on a protein called granulocyte colony-stimulating factor. This protein triggers the body's bone marrow stem cells.

Stem Cells To Combat Peripheral Arterial Disease?

Researchers at the Indiana University School of Medicine in Indianapolis are running a study to look into the possibility of using adult stem cell injections to promote blood vessel repair and the growth of new blood vessels.

The idea is that the stem cell injections may someday be used to treat the cardiovascular condition called peripheral arterial disease (PAD).

Stem Cell Heart Procedures Getting Feedback

In the stem cell research field, we generally read mainly pure research articles, as so much out there is still in development.

However, there are have been some studies abroad that are showing results. With all the controversy with researchers like Hwang Woo-suk falsifying documents and research breakthroughs, I thought it a good time to look at some actual procedures that real people are reporting as positive.

Stem Cells To Be Used To Treat Artery Disease

Indiana University School of Medicine researchers are starting a clinical trial that tests stem cells as a treatment option for peripheral artery disease.

This trial involves using injections of stem cell as a treatment that could offer hope to tens of thousands of people who face sores, ulcers and amputations that are due to severe peripheral artery disease.

Cytori Therapeutics Develops Stem Cell Solution From Fat Cells

Cytori Therapeutics has developed a new piece of medical equipment that literally pulls stem cells out of fat tissue so that the cells can then be re-injected into the body to repair tissue damaged by heart attack or disease.

Several studies over the past couple of years have shown that stem cells and other regenerative material from fat can help restore blood flow to the cardiac muscle that has been damaged by a heart attack.

Stem Cell Therapy For Heart Disease News

Forbes is covering reports by participants at major conference in New York on stem-cell therapy who agree that such a cure for heart disease is proving elusive.

Though some studies are showing a modest benefit from these cell-transplant therapies for heart disease, significant improvements in heart function have yet to be seen.

"Nothing that I've seen at this meeting, with regard to cell therapy, show that it prolongs the life of heart-failure patients," said Dr. Eric Rose, chairman of the department of surgery and associate dean of translational research at Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons, in New York City.

Heart Cells Can Dedifferentiate?

Wired is running an article .. not so much about stem cells, but methods being researched on causing adult heart cells to dedifferentiate to earlier stage cells .. similar in function to stem cells. This kind of research promises to open even more insight into the field of regenerative medicine .. and likely to excite those in the longevity fields too.

Essentially, Hydra Biosciences is working a new regeneration drug therapy that causes heart muscle-cells to regrow. This research could lead to a faster recovery for heart attack victims.

Essentially this protein-based drug induces mature cells to become a little bit like stem cells in that they can actually regenerate muscle tissue within the heart.

Stem Cell Myocardial Infarction Treatment Reduces Infarction

The latest news regarding heart stem cell therapy points to Doctors at the Catholic University of Leuven publishing a new breakthrough in the treatment of patients with acute myocardial infarction.

The research indicates that the administration of a patient's own stem cells has a significant positive effect on the heart's recovery. The patients that participated in the study showed a clear reduction in the the size of their infarct.

Furthermore, the use of stem cells appears to be safe, and thusfar, no side effects have been detected that can be attributed to the stem cells.

Don Ho goes in for stem cell heart therapy

Well known (at least to those of us old enough to know -- blushes) Hawaiian singer Don Ho was just released from a Bangkok hospital Thursday after undergoing an experimental heart procedure.

Ho has had his own stem cells injected into his heart Monday night, which is expected to improve the muscle's pumping ability by as much as 70 percent.

Bone Marrow Stem Cell Transplants Improve Heart Function

An encouraging study presented at the Cardiovascular Research Foundation’s (CRF) Annual Transcatheter Cardiovascular Therapeutics (TCT) scientific symposium has shown that transplantation of bone marrow stem cells into the heart improves heart function and blood flow in heart attack patients for up to six months. Among other applications, scientists are currently investigating these stem cells and their potential in repairing damage or loss to cardiac cells and tissues due to heart attacks or other heart conditions.

Bone marrow mononuclear (stem) cells, or BMMCs, are derived from the soft, sponge-like marrow found inside bones, and can develop into tissue or new blood vessels. Patients in this study were treated with stem cells extracted from their own bone marrow.
