Difference Between Private and Public Cord Blood Banking

More parents are choosing to donate their baby's umbilical cord blood that is why it's very important for families to know the difference between public and private cord blood banks.

Public cord blood banks have been established to further the research of the medical treatments of umbilical cord blood stem cells and for use in transplants of non-relatives.

If you donate your baby's umbilical cord blood to a public blood bank, they do not provide a link between your baby and your baby's cord blood unit.

Cord Blood Collection Company Biocord Ltd Seeking Capital

Cord blood as we all know is one of the hot "controversy free" methods of collecting umbilical cord stem cells for both research and a growing variety of stem cell therapies.

Biocord Ltd. has entered the growing number of cord blood collection companies with a medical device that it hopes to market to hospitals and health care facilities.

This one however, gets away from the "traditional" (hate to traditional .. makes it sound like this has been going on for decades) needle extraction methods.

DURHAM, N.C., Sept. 30 - The ability to derive adult stem cell lines from different human tissues would provide an adjunct to human embryonic stem cells (hESCs) for biomedical research.

A forthcoming article in the journal Stem Cells by scientists at The George Washington University Medical Center in Washington, D.C., describes a method that may ultimately lead to this goal in the case of the hematopoietic (blood-forming) system.

New Stem Cell Mobilizer Improves Cancer Patient Chances For Stem Cell Transplantation

Vancouver, BC, September 6, 2005 - A study published in the current issue of the peer-reviewed journal, Blood, demonstrates that cancer patients who received AMD3100 (MOZOBIl) plus granulocyte-colony stimulating factor (G-CSF) were able to collect more stem cells in less time compared to the standard mobilization regimen, G-CSF alone.

"Cancer patients need better stem cell mobilization, as the strongest predictor of success in transplant is the number of cells available for transplantation", said study lead investigator Dr. Neal Flomenberg, Chief, Division of Medical Oncology, Thomas Jefferson University, Philadelphia, PA.
