Snuppy Was In Fact a Clone

Despite being discredited, the fallen king of Korean stem cell research, Hwang Woo-suk, seemingly did in fact create the Afghan hound named Snuppy and is in fact, the world’s first cloned dog.

Experts at Seoul National University as well as researchers in the US carried out similar DNA experiments using blood samples from Snuppy, the cell donor dog and Snuppy's surrogate mother.

The results did in fact demostrate that he was cloned by researchers led by Hwang Woo-suk.

The Stem Cell Debate In Delaware Almost Over

The Delaware House, in a 38-3 vote, approved amendment number two to Senate Bill 80.

This bill dictates that anyone who is caught cloning in Delaware will face a million dollar fine. Additionally, anyone selling embryos whether it be a woman, physician or fertility clinic faces a $100,000 fine.

"That amendment was driven by public outcry because Delaware doesn't have a ban on cloning and that was something that probably should have been done years ago," said Rep. Deborah Hudson.

Korean Researchers Again On Patient Matched Stem Cells

South Korean researchers have a new announcement following up on the genetically matched stem cells they created from before. They have again used skin to create embryonic stem cells that genetically match injured or sick patients.

Additionally, these scientists did so far faster and making it easier to grow human stem cells than researchers had thought possible.

This isn't merely a nifty achievement. This is a major advance that may one day allow doctors to use stem cells to grow customized cell or tissue transplants to treat spinal cord injuries, Parkinson's and other ailments. Naturally this will also some news that is likely to increase the heat of the debate surrounding the ethics involved.

Korean Researcher Hwang Woo-suk At It Again .. Clones Dog

Well, most of us won't really be suprised by this, but it certainly adds a bit of glam to Hwang's endeavors thusfar. Sure, he has been reportedly quite successful in his stem cell work. But this is "straight up" cloning.

It is being pretty widely reported that Hwang and his team at the Seoul National University, Korea, have announced that they have cloned an Afghan hound now called Snuppy. This procedure is not new .. being the same somatic nuclear cell transfer method used to create Dolly the sheep...

Reproductive Research Now Looking At Stem Cell Research

Researchers in Britain are now showing that that stem cells extracted from human embryos can be developed into the early forms of cells that become eggs or sperm. This latest announcement increases the likelyhood that one day eggs and sperm needed for infertility treatment could be grown.

To touch also clearly hit a nerve, some of this research also suggests that researchers may eventually be able to use this technique to create eggs for cloning....

Hwang Woo-Suk States That Cloning of Human Impossible For Decades

Hwang Woo-Suk, from Korea and known as one of the world's cloning pioneers said this week that the cloning of human beings would remain an impossible and dangerous fantasy for decades to come.

"Human cloning is not only ethically outrageous and medically dangerous, but technically impossible as well," said Hwang. Dr. Hwang would know best, as last year created the world's first cloned human embryonic stem cells.

"Cloned human beings are merely a science fiction fantasy. I can assure you that on this globe, you'll never bump into a cloned human being at least within 100 years."

Human Cloning Foundation hails Newcastle University

The Human Cloning Foundation (HCF) hailed recent news that a University of Newcastle team in the United Kingdom had successfully cloned a human embryo in Britain for the first time.

“The significance of this achievement is that the cloned human embryo can provide stem cells that can be used for treating all kinds of degenerative diseases,” said David Madrigal, HCF spokesman. “It’s a major step forward for British research into human cloning.”

More on Cloning and Stem Cell Research News From Korea

With all the news, including tons of coverage on the popular TV media outlets like CNN and BBC, the breakthrough announcements coming out of Korea are sweeping the minds and attentions of people all across the world. We have been out of town for the weekend, but still the rippling effect of the cloning research being done in Korea still was on every TV we passed by it seemed.

However, this news has many in the US running a bit scared so to speak. Combine that with the efforts to block legislation promoting further funding of embryonic stem cell research in the nation's capital. A busy next few months its going to be here.

Since I am a big fan of Wired, lets look at their latest article today first, as they have some relevant insight. This one discusses how American embryonic stem-cell scientists are naturally concerned that the lack of government funding and hostility toward the field of stem cell research and theraputic cloning is causing them to fall behind other countries. Naturally in this case, the focus is the research done in South Korea....

Cloned Embryos Created to Match Stem Cells, Patients

South Korean scientists have announced a highly efficient way to clone human cells. This latest discovery could alter the scientific and political debate over the procedure.

Effectively they have created 11 new lines of cloned human embryonic stem cells. For the first time, this includes two that are genetically matched to patients with a disease. The two disease-carrying cell lines were cloned from patients with juvenile diabetes and an inherited blood disorder.

Cloning To Develop Stem Cells In An Effort To Cure Blood Diseases

In the fight to turn back the fatal blood diseases like leukemia, the most powerful tool thusfar has been the bone-marrow transplant. However, many patients are unable to find a donor who is a close-enough match to limit the risk of rejection.

Even in the instance when there is a good match, the overall treatment procedure is still quite risky. The Children's Hospital in Boston is considered one of the best program is considered one of the world's bes. Nevertheless, 8 percent of its transplant patients die within approximately one year, as indicated by last year's statistics....

Stem Cell Clones Developed By BioE

BioE stated this past Wednesday that it will soon start selling cloned stem cells to researchers to be used in developing drugs and regenerative medicine.

BioE Chief Executive Mike Haider said his company's "Multi-Linear Progenitor Cells" avoid the ethical and religious quandaries typically associated with reproductive cloning and stem-cell research...

The reason is that the cells are not taken from human embryos, but harvested from the blood in umbilical cords, which normally are discarded after babies are born....

Italian Stallion Cloned From Sterile Champion Race Horse

Scientists in Italy are reporting that they have created their second cloned horse. This latest clone entry is an Italian stallion that is the first ever produced from a sterile race champion.

The cloned foal was born on February 25 weighing 42 kg and "is in excellent health", the scientists stated.

This horse is a clone of the hore know as Pieraz. Pieraz was a champion race horse and Arabian breed that won the world endurance race championship back in 1994 and 1996. Pieraz is now retired and in a stable in the US....

Scientists classified the birth as a breakthrough that paves the way for preserving the lines of the best race horses by creating clones that can breed.
