Heart Muscle With Built-In Blood Supply Created From Stem Cells

Researchers at the Technion-Israel Institute of Technology have created new heart muscle with its own blood supply using human embryonic stem cells.

The newly engineered muscle could replace cardiac tissue damaged in heart attacks.

Researchers' study was published online January 11 in the journal Circulation Research.

Dismissing Cancer Stem Cells

Scientists have found the Achilles' heel of cells that jump start tumor growth.

According to a new study, these "cancer stem cells" reside in blood vessels. The researchers say that disrupting these vessels may prove a far more effective cancer therapy than targeting other regions of a tumor.

Cancer stem cells are the ultimate source of the tumor, consistently supplying it with new cells.

Stem Cell Marker Identified On Head And Neck Tumor Cells

In a study at the University of Michigan Medical School researchers have found a marker on head and neck tumor cells that indicates which cells are capable of fueling the cancer’s growth.

By identifying the stem cells, researchers can then develop drugs to target and kill these cells.

Brain Stem Cells To Fight Cancer

Research at Lund University in Sweden provides hope that in the future it may be possible to develop stem cells from the brain into a new way to treat gliomas.

Neural stem cells have been shown to have the ability to recognize signals from tumor cells in the brain and migrate there. If stem cells are injected into a part of the brain in laboratory animals with a glioma in another part of their brain, the stem cells migrate over to the tumor area.

What is Glioblastoma?

Glioblastoma is the most malignant form of brain tumor and has a very poor prognosis.

A glioma is a type of primary central nervous system (CNS) tumor that arises from glial cells. The most common site of involvement of a glioma is the brain, but they can also affect the spinal cord, or any other part of the CNS, such as the optic nerves.

At UKY Researchers Map Gene that Regulates Adult Stem Cell Growth

The researchers at the University of Kentucky have genetically mapped a stem cell gene and its protein product, Latexin.

Gary Van Zant, Ph.D., and a research team published their findings in Nature Genetics, an international scientific journal.

Amniotic Fluid of Pregnant Women as an Alternative Stem Cell Source

The cells found in amniotic fluid of pregnant women has many of the same traits as embryonic stem cells; they are able to grow into brain, muscle and other tissues that could be used to treat diseases, researchers said, and are easily retrieved during routine prenatal testing.

They are easier to maintain in laboratory dishes than embryonic stem cells, which come from destroyed human embryos.
