Using Stem Cells as Drug Delivery To Bypass Blood Brain Barrier

The blood brain barrier is a well known problem to neurologists trying to introduce certain compounds to the brains of patients suffering from things like Parkinson's and Alzheimer's. However, a new method using stem cells may be a solution.

One stem cell researcher at the University of Wisconsin-Madison is working on engineering and then implanting progenitor brain cells which have been derived from stem cells to deliver growth factors that show proven clinical benefits for Parkinson's disease.

Egg Like Cells Produced From Pig Fetal Stem Cells

Canadian stem cell researchers at the University of Guelph are reporting that they have discoverd stem cells within the skins of pig fetuses are able to produce egg-like cells.

Embryologists have been investigating for years to determine where germ cells are formed. These stem cells show that within the early stage embryo, different cell lines are formed which include the germ cells.

Stem Cell Research Hits No Ethical Nerves When Treating Horses

A stem cell research firm in Singapore has been working on giving Asian racehorse owners a new way of treating tendon and ligament injuries. This news follows other news regarding stem cell research for horses that allows treatment and therapies to be developed without ethical concerns.

EZ Stemcell's therapy starts out with harvesting bone marrow from the horse's own sternum. EZ Stemcell then isolates multi-potential stem cells, which are then reinjected into the horse's injured tendon.

Optimal Growth Media for Human Embryonic Stem Cells Found

Stem cell researchers at Yale determined the minimal nutritional requirements for growing and maintaining human embryonic stem cells (hESCs). The growth media is any form of clinical application and for developmental studies.

hESCs divide continuously through many generations and can differentiate into many different types of cell. In order to sustain the hESCs' growth, the mix of nutrients or media they are grown in must be sterile and clear of any toxins or materials that might cause an immune response.

Stem Cells Differentiation Process Involved with Leukemia

Researchers have recently discovered what manages the balance between blood stem cells and mature blood cells within the body. This bodily process is often what is seen in leukemia patients.

News coming from an article published in the journal Cancer Cell, will hopefully lead researchers to a better understanding of the behavior of leukemic cells. Additionally, this may provide applications for patients recovering from radiation therapy, bone marrow transplants, and chemotherapy.

Stem Cell Researchers Investigate Replacing Bone Graft Procedures

A lecture at the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons' (AAOS) Meeting, a panel of orthopaedic surgeons from the Orthopaedic Research Society (ORS) discussed a new technique to replace bone grafts.

The hope is that adult stem cell therapy for broken bones can minimize the need for the traditional "autograft" procedures in the cases of severe bone injury where patients are not healing normally.

Many patients with these kinds of severe injuries usually undergo multiple reconstructive operations that often require a bone graft, or autograft. An effective stem cell therapy offers a significantly less painful solution to treat simple and complex fractures, particularly those that require additional time to fully heal.

Regererative Medicine Gains Traction

As most of us that read here know, stem cell research is becoming directly involved in the field of regenerative medicine. Certainly we are looking to cure diseases in this field. However, there are many researchers out evaluating things like stem cell research that will improve our overall quality of living too.

Sure, stem cells are tied up in the courts, senates, state houses and capital buildings across the US and the world. However, those of you that are new to this field, you must also understand that some of the goals in this type of research include things like skin repair, cartilage replacement, hair growth and bone repair.

In many cases, these are not life threatening problems .. but does walking without pain benefit those suffering from cartilage damage? Certainly yes. Could we live longer and healthier lives if our hearts could be regenerated even marginally? Again, definitely.

Some experts have stated that we may easily be able to live regularly beyond the current upper limit of 120 years, this past Wednesday. However, this goes past the problem of living longer .. what does it means WHEN we live longer.

Researchers at MIT's Center for Cancer Research have discovered stem cells in the lung.

This is thusfar, the first time anyone has found stem cells in the lung that we know of. The MIT team claims that these cells could be the stem cells that cause lung cancer.

"We think those cells are the ones that first proliferate after a [cancer] gene gets activated," says Carla Bender Kim, a postdoctoral fellow at the center and lead author of the study, which was published in the journal Cell.
