Muscle Stem Cells Into Cartilage?

Well, hope for my blown knee keeps getting closer. Yesterday, Forbes ran an article about researchers which are saying that they have turned adult muscle stem cells into cartilage. Furthmore, (sigh of relief here) the stem cells were used in animals to heal the kind of damage caused by arthritis.

For those of us that face eventual joint-replacement surgery because there is no current technique to repair cartilage damage from osteoarthritis, the wear-and-tear condition that afflicts many older people (and younger .. I am not that old).

Heart Cells Can Dedifferentiate?

Wired is running an article .. not so much about stem cells, but methods being researched on causing adult heart cells to dedifferentiate to earlier stage cells .. similar in function to stem cells. This kind of research promises to open even more insight into the field of regenerative medicine .. and likely to excite those in the longevity fields too.

Essentially, Hydra Biosciences is working a new regeneration drug therapy that causes heart muscle-cells to regrow. This research could lead to a faster recovery for heart attack victims.

Essentially this protein-based drug induces mature cells to become a little bit like stem cells in that they can actually regenerate muscle tissue within the heart.

The Stem Cell Debate In Delaware Almost Over

The Delaware House, in a 38-3 vote, approved amendment number two to Senate Bill 80.

This bill dictates that anyone who is caught cloning in Delaware will face a million dollar fine. Additionally, anyone selling embryos whether it be a woman, physician or fertility clinic faces a $100,000 fine.

"That amendment was driven by public outcry because Delaware doesn't have a ban on cloning and that was something that probably should have been done years ago," said Rep. Deborah Hudson.

Breast Cancer Stem Cell Discovery

Some long overdue news .. as I lost a close friend to breast cancer at only 29. It appears that scientists at the Walter and Eliza Hall Institute in Melbourne, Australia have made a break through using stem cella that may help us better understand why some women develop breast cancer and further, suffer recurrences despite undergoing procedures such as chemotherapy.

However, the research team did state that the discovery could lead to specialised individual treatment .. but it would likely be a decade or more before it is publicly available.

Stem Cell Myocardial Infarction Treatment Reduces Infarction

The latest news regarding heart stem cell therapy points to Doctors at the Catholic University of Leuven publishing a new breakthrough in the treatment of patients with acute myocardial infarction.

The research indicates that the administration of a patient's own stem cells has a significant positive effect on the heart's recovery. The patients that participated in the study showed a clear reduction in the the size of their infarct.

Furthermore, the use of stem cells appears to be safe, and thusfar, no side effects have been detected that can be attributed to the stem cells.

The New Year Ended With a Strawberry

Having spent a LOT of time out of town over the holidays (and leading up to them) we hope to get our collective butts in gear so to speak and get back into the news.

With the end of 2005 focusing on mainly the downfall of the researcher Hwang Woo-Suk, this has not dampened the advances being made in stem cell research overall.
