First-Ever FDA-Approved Trial to Transplant Human Neural Stem Cells

(NASDAQ: STEM) today announced that it has received clearance from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to begin a Phase I safety and preliminary efficacy trial of the Company’s proprietary human neural stem cell product ─HuCNS-SC ™─ to treat Batten disease. Batten disease is a rare, fatal genetic disorder that affects the central nervous system of children. This is the first-ever FDA-approved clinical trial to use a purified composition of human neural stem cells as a potential therapeutic agent in humans.

GE Healthcare and ThermoGenesis Announce Worldwide Distribution Agreement and R&D Collaboration

CHALFONT ST. GILES, England and RANCHO CORDOVA, Calif., Oct. 14 - GE Healthcare, a unit of General Electric Company (NYSE: GE), and ThermoGenesis (Nasdaq: KOOL) announced today a global distribution agreement and R&D partnership. The companies will jointly present the AXP(TM) AutoXpress Platform, a closed and automated system for harvesting mononuclear cells (MNC) from cord blood, at the AABB Annual Meeting in Seattle, Washington on October 17th and 18th.

This cell population contains the hematopoietic stem cells used to treat more than 60 malignant, genetic and acquired diseases, such as leukemia, lymphoma, sickle cell anemia, thalassemia and immunodeficiency.

MENLO PARK, Calif., Oct. 14 - A new Johns Hopkins University study - conducted by Knowledge Networks - brings a nuanced understanding to policy makers' understanding of views on the polarizing issue of stem cell research.

The study was developed by the university's Genetics and Public Policy Center and supported by The Pew Charitable Trusts in partnership with the Phoebe R. Berman Bioethics Institute at Johns Hopkins.

Plureon Corporation Announces Diabetes Research and Development Agreement With BD

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C., Oct. 14 - Plureon Corporation ("Plureon") today announced that it has entered into an agreement with BD (Becton, Dickinson and Company) in the field of diabetes research and development using Plureon's platform stem cell technology. Plureon's stem cells may be obtained from placental tissues that are usually discarded as medical waste after birth.

Under the agreement, BD will sponsor Plureon's research efforts for up to three years and will be responsible for further development of the technology. Plureon retains rights to provide future manufacturing and medical education support to BD.

Citizens' Initiative Effort Launched to Protect Stem Cell Research and Cures in Missouri

Statewide Ballot Measure is the First in U.S. Designed to Protect Patients' Rights to Receive Stem Cell Therapies and Cures

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo., Oct. 11 - A coalition of patient advocacy groups, medical organizations and concerned citizens today launched an effort to seek voter approval of a state constitutional amendment designed to ensure that any stem cell research, therapies and cures permitted by federal law will continue to be allowed in Missouri. The amendment, called the Missouri Stem Cell Research and Cures Initiative, is the first state measure in the nation that would clearly protect the right of patients to have their diseases and injuries treated with any stem cell cures allowed by federal law.

Osiris Launches a Phase II Clinical Trial for Severe Graft vs Host Disease

BALTIMORE, Maryland October 12, 2005 Osiris Therapeutics, Inc. announced today that it has received clearance from the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to conduct a Phase II trial to evaluate the safety and effectiveness of its lead investigational stem cell drug, Prochymal, for the rescue of patients with the most severe form of acute graft vs. host disease (GVHD).

So called treatment-refractory GVHD occurs when patients fail to respond to conventional therapy and is fatal in more than 80% of cases.
