University of Georgia Gets NIH Grant for Stem Cell Research
Researchers at the University of Georgia have been awarded a grant of $425,598 subcontract to develop human embryonic stem cell-derived tests for screening drugs capable of treating spinal muscular atrophy (SMA), the number one genetic killer of children under the age of two.
With this it appears that stem cell research is now moving into more traditional drug research side here. Its not merely a matter of looking for a cure from injecting targeted Stem Cells into patients, but using Stem Cells to search for drug therapies for certain conditions as well. Sort of a twist on all our research thusfar, but of interest as well.

Studies Identify Advances in Sickle Cell Disease
Nearly one-third of adults with sickle cell disease (SCD) develop
pulmonary hypertension (PH), a rare blood vessel disorder of the lungs in which the pressure in the pulmonary artery (the blood vessel that leads from the heart to the lungs) rises above normal levels and may become life threatening. PH is a risk factor for mortality in SCD, with death rates significantly higher in sickle cell patients with the disorder as compared patients without PH. Pulmonary hypertension can cause fatigue, dizziness, and shortness of breath as blood vessels that supply the lungs narrow, forcing the heart to work harder to push blood through.... Read On
