Stem Cells may actually fuel brain cancer

A study by both Canadian and American researchers suggest that long living normal stem cells within the brain may mutate to cancer inducing cells.

The study seems to lead researchers to the premise that if isolation of these mutated cells is possible, additional therapies for specific types of brain cancer may be developed. Stem cells have already been ...

Embryonic Stem Cells targetting Spinal Cord Repair

UC Irvine Reeve-Irvine researchers have used human embryonic stem cells to grow cells called oligodendrocytes, the building blocks of the myelin tissue that wraps around and insulates nerve fibers.

Researchers developed a technique of forcing cells to develop into early-stage oligodendrocyte cells. After transplantatthese cells into mice, the cells formed into full-grown oligodendrocyte cells and migrated to appropriate neuronal sites within the mouse's spinal cord.

Switzerland further evaluates Stem Cell Research

Switzerland, after having passed a law last year regarding fertilised eggs left over from artificial insemination to be used for research purposes under a series of conditions is back a looking at new laws again.

However, there seem to be quite a few rules, as there are throughout the EU and the rest of Europe.

Switzerland seems to be caught up in the same ethical dilema's that plague the US regarding unlimited research. So essentially in Switzerland the debate rages on with only a slight majority of Swiss voters supporting the research (based on poll data).
