Stem cell use within animals is effectively without congressional controversy. Sure, there are certainly oppose animal reseach .. but in the field of stem cell research .. we generally look past that firestorm.

It appears however, that race horses are seeing some of the benefits that can be derived from stem cell research. Tendon related injuries within racehorses recover faster with stem cell therapies than with the conventional treatment of rest and graduated training.

What is an interesting note is that these horses then have fewer injuries when they are returned to racing.

The treatment procedure was developed over the last three years by Roger Smith and his colleagues at the UK's Royal Veterinary College in North Mymms, Hertfordshire. The process requires bone marrow stem cells to be taken from the horse's own sternum, and then multiplied and reinjected back into injured area.
