This trial involves using injections of stem cell as a treatment that could offer hope to tens of thousands of people who face sores, ulcers and amputations that are due to severe peripheral artery disease.
Roughly 10 million people in the US are affected by poor blood circulation, most often in the legs, as a result of peripheral artery disease. The disease is caused by atherosclerosis, which is the clogging and / or hardening of arteries. This condition can also lead to heart attacks.
In this trial, U. of Indiana researdchers are using stem cells, and slightly more specialized descendants called progenitor cells. The hope in this trial is that they can create the cells that make up the lining of blood vessels.
