Lawmakers in Connecticut Support Funding for Stem Cell Research
Related News: Stem Cells and GovernmentFive of Connecticut's U.S. House members were unified in their support for legislation which would lift the current limitations on using federal funds for new embryonic stem cell research.
However, as we all know, President Bush has threatened to veto the bill, which passed by a 238-194 vote. This falls far short of the two-thirds majority that would be required to override a veto.
"Stem cell research holds tremendous promise to develop cures for the most deadly and debilitating diseases," said Rep. Nancy Johnson, R-Conn., who pushed GOP leaders to allow a vote on the measure. "I believe Congress has a responsibility to advance research that saves lives, relieves pain and prevents suffering."
This new bill would actually lift Bush's funding ban on new stem cell research and allow for federal funds to be set aside for research on stem cells from surplus embryos.
Rep. Christopher Shays, R-Conn., called the stem cell vote one of the most important ones he will ever cast in Congress.
Rep. Rosa DeLauro, D-Conn., recalled her own brush with cancer when discussing the bill.
