Aastrom Biosciences Announces FDA Approval for Expanded Clinical Trials

Aastrom Biosciences Inc. reported Thursday that it will expanded its clinical trial on the use of stem cells for the repair of bone fractures to a fourth U.S. site.

With news of this, Aastrom's shares rose 27 cents, or 9.4 percent, to $3.14 in morning trading on the Nasdaq.

The company said that the Lutheran Medical Center in Brooklyn, N.Y., will participate in the early- to mid-stage study on the use of Aastrom's adult stem cell-based tissue-repair cell treatment for severe long bone nonunion fractures.

The Phase I/II study is also being conducted at Lutheran General Hospital in Park Ridge, Ill., the University of Michigan Health System in Ann Arbor, and the William Beaumont Hospital in Royal Oak, Mich.
