Governor Appoints Dean to Stem-Cell Commission
Related News: Stem Cells and GovernmentDr. Brian Henderson, dean of the Keck School of Medicine, has been appointed by Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger as a member of the Independent Citizens Oversight Committee, a board formed to manage and oversee the allotment of $3 billion for stem-cell research.
USC plays a role as a "California non-profit and research institution that is not part of the University of California, that has demonstrated success and leadership in stem cell research," according to the actual text of the proposition.
While the passage does not directly name USC, the legislation implies that it refers to USC, Henderson said.
Henderson said he does not hold his appointed position as an independent citizen, but acts as a representative from USC.
The committee will make their decisions with the proposition's goals in mind, specifically "promoting stem cell research with hopes of alleviating human suffering," Henderson said.
He explained that the committee would review the expenditure of money and determine the best way to make use of funds allotted to research institutions.
