Cartilix, a startup biotech in San Carlos, CA, has appears to have started researching a technology that might help polymer materials that direct the growth and development of stem cells specifically for building and regenerating cartilage for arthritis patients.... The work focuses on polymer gels that would then be implanted into the joints of arthritic patients and serve as scaffolds upon which the patients’ own bone marrow stem cells would form new cartilage.

The stem cells basically would come from the within blood stream and naturally seeps into the joint area during the implantation procedure. After new tissue forms, the polymer would eventually biodegrade. The goal is that this treatment will help patients “get their own cartilage back” and avoid joint replacement surgery, says Frank Huerta, Cartilix’s CEO.

MAN do I need this, and my Mom just got a new knee already .. so this is a real perk in the future. I am getting tired of talking about our body parts as though we are going to a mechanic for a tune up.
