Wisconsin is the site of the original efforts to harvest embryonic stem cells for medical research.

Now pro-life activists are battling the state's Democratic governor, Jim Doyle, over his plan to spend $375 million to advance the controversial scientific technique......

money that would come from private sources as well as the taxpayers and would finance the construction of a new research institute focused on embryonic stem cell research and other projects.

Wisconsin Right to Life is against the state tax dollars being used to kill embryos, but supports adult stem cell research.

Susan Armacost, legislative director and chief lobbyist for the pro-life group said that with the state facing a projected budget deficit the governor is "making a huge mistake economically as well" and that the strategy for fighting Doyle's proposal will be determined once the governor submits his budget for 2005-07 early next year.
